Traveling is an amazing adventure – especially when those once-in-a-lifetime moments are captured on camera. Here, we’ve put together a couple of handy hints and tips to consider for travel photography.

  1. Don’t miss what’s around you. It’s easy to get stuck behind a lens and become engrossed with capturing absolutely everything. On once in a lifetime trips, it’s likely that you won’t have the chance to visit the place again, so make sure you allow yourself to take in the sites without your camera obstructing your view!
  2. Familiarise yourself with the culture before you go. Many amazing travel destinations often have very different beliefs and morals to what you’re accustomed to. Make sure you stay respectful and are mindful of how you act, how you approach people, and what you wear.
  3. Take no for an answer. There’s some amazing sites to be seen traveling the world but be aware that it might not be legal to pitch up your tripod just anywhere. Places of worship may have a photography ban imposed, as may some public buildings and areas. Similarly, locals may be uncomfortable being in your photos so if they are the subject of your shot, make sure you inform them.
  4. Don’t just head for the traditional ‘tourist’ places. There’s masses of beautiful architecture and sites to be witnessed down backstreets and in places that may not be considered as tourist destinations. Let your journey take you to places off the beaten track, just make sure you stay safe and keep your wits about you.
  5. Whether you’re an amateur or professional photographer, make sure you insure your equipment properly. Photography insurance policies vary depending on the country you’re in and what you’re covered for. Make sure you check out all the details before you start your travels to avoid any upset should you camera be lost, stolen or damaged.
