While it’s all good and well having a bit of a laugh, the picture does little to convey the speed of the racing car, the margin for error, or the catastrophic consequences of high speed crashes – especially for the photographer in this case. And while the cynical among us may be tempted to say that the creation of the Health & Safety Executive in 1974 was a politically motivated job creation scheme – unemployment figures improve, tax revenues improve in time for the Budget and it is all paid for by the Private Sector – there was much to be done for safety in racing at this time.

In an era where safety was not synonymous with motor racing, the image brings to light, a number of considerations – a number of these relating to the photographer sat behind the lens. Even those photographers not embarking on crazy expeditions risking life and limb need to be aware of the risks which accompany their profession. The financial losses facing photographers if equipment is damaged can be significant if not properly insured.
