Most professional photographers are confident that their memory cards are protected by the digital camera they’re encased in, but not perhaps, when they’ve been badly damaged.  However, there are lots of stories of camera equipment that has been dropped in the ocean, lost in forests and yet the images have been found and retrieved without issue.

Recently, we read about a camera that was found in Colorado that had been dropped down a steep hill.  Photos were retrieved from the memory card and it was discovered they had been taken in 2006.  Amazingly, when the story was reported in the press, the owner of the camera came forward and was reunited with his camera and his images taken six years before.  He’d been hiking, had dropped the camera, been unable to retrieve it and thought it was lost forever.

It just shows how hardy memory cards are these days are and how, even if you have badly damaged your camera, you may still be able to retrieve your precious photographs.

Some professional photographer insurance packages include forensic recovery, which means if your camera is damaged, for example, in a fire or a flood, experts may be able to retrieve the images under your policy.  Check with your insurance provider to see if they offer this service.

It also demonstrates that camera equipment insurance is vital as we’ve seen in the many cases like the above.  If you haven’t updated your policy recently, make sure it includes everything you own.  Too many professional photographers are underinsured and only realise this when they come to make a claim.  If you’re a photographer and your insurance is up for renewal, call us today and you might be surprised at how much you can save on your current policy.
