I’m sure most people will be familiar with the story that has flooded the national press recently, of a bride’s father who tragically choked to death at his daughter’s wedding reception. The story appeared in a number of local, regional and national newspapers, with various images from the event used to report on it.

The images from the wedding have been the topic of discussion in many photography discussion groups over the past week. It has been reported that the pictures used within the press belonged to the wedding photographer, however, in most cases were accredited to other sources. This has raised a huge issue and uncovered a variety of potential sticky situations.

All parties involved could face possible legal action – the newspapers, journalists, and even the bride and photographer. Without knowing the exact facts of the case, there could be a number of potential issues arise including breach of privacy, breach of copyright, breach of contract and confidentiality, and fraudulent misrepresentation.

This gives professional wedding photographers a number of things to consider in order to avoid a possible PR nightmare.  It must be ensured all fixed and mobile computer devices, including peripheral storage device are secure with strong password protection and encryption, if possible.  Photographers should also deploy security measures for websites and online platforms containing client records and images to ensure they do not fall into the wrong hands.

In high profile situations like this one, it is also important to be prepared for press attention, whether it is negative or positive. It is worth checking if your business insurance policies cover you for PR or legal help.
