Professional photographers frequently put their images on photo sharing websites as a place to store all their photos in the same place or as a way to get valuable feedback from fellow photographers.

A recent photo sharing site caused mass panic when it vanished taking tens of thousands of photographer’s images with it.  Fotopic.net went under after its owner went bust.

The good news is that certain photographers have now been told that they can download their images for a limited time and the plan is to roll this out slowly so that eventually everyone will be able to access their image.  If this is you, I’d advise that you do this as soon as possible in case there are any further access issues.  Once photographers have got hold of their images, the site will be closed down again.

The case shows that amateur and professional photographers should never rely on just one place to store all their images.  You can never rely on the fact that a website site will always be there.  Always back up your photographs and keep them in different places.
